HILARY GOULDING THERAPY

LICENSED MARRIAGE & FAMILY THERAPIST

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I get started?

Reach out to me by phone, email or the contact page. I offer a complimentary 20-minute phone consultation to all potential clients. This will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about me, the practice or the therapy process. Also, take this time to get to know my personality and decide if I will be a good fit for you. Additionally, I will ask you questions about the issues you would like to address in therapy in order to determine if I will be the best resource for you. Then, if you wish to proceed, we can schedule a session.

How long are sessions and how often do I attend therapy?

Adult/adolescent sessions are offered in 50 and 80-minute increments. Couples sessions are also offered in 50 and 80-minute lengths. 80-minute sessions can be helpful for initial sessions and EMDR sessions as a lot of information is often covered. I recommend starting out attending once per week. Depending on your goals and progress, more frequent or less frequent sessions may work best for you in the future.

How long will I be in therapy?

The therapeutic process is different for everyone. I take a highly individualized approach to treatment in order to meet the specific needs of my clients. The duration of therapy can vary depending on the nature of the issues addressed, your individual goals for treatment and frequency of sessions.

Is therapy confidential?

Absolutely! All client information and therapy sessions are confidential, except when legally and/or ethically mandated, including:

  1. Suspected abuse or neglect of children, dependent adults and elders
  2. Intent to harm self or others
  3. Legal subpoena, only if issued by a judge directly requiring waiver of the privilege of confidentiality

How does online therapy and virtual sessions work?

Online therapy is a great resource for clients who have hectic schedules, work from home, experience difficulty making it into the office for an appointment or simply enjoy the comfort of their own home during sessions. Most importantly, research has shown great success with treatment outcomes with the use of online therapy.

I utilize Simple Practice to conduct my sessions. Simple Practice is a HIPAA compliant video conferencing platform, which is easily accessed through a web browser or the Simple Practice app on a smartphone. The day before your session, you will receive an email reminder containing a unique link for the session. At the time of our session, simply click on the link to launch the session. In addition to video conferencing, you may access online scheduling, appointment reminders and billing from your Simple Practice client portal.

Why must I be a Colorado or California resident for online therapy?

Each state has it’s own licensing board for Marriage and Family Therapists, which regulates the profession. The laws and regulations set forth by the board are extremely important for the welfare of consumers. However, this means therapists are only allowed to practice within the state of their license. I hold licenses for both states.

Do you accept insurance?

I am considered an out-of-network provider for most insurance. I am currently in-network with Aetna in Colorado. Sessions may be covered in part by PPO health insurance plans. Monthly super bills may be provided to clients to submit to their insurance companies for out-of-network provider benefits. Please contact your insurance company to verify out-of-network benefits prior to your first session. If you do wish to use out-of-network insurance benefits, I will be required to provide a diagnosis, which will be attached to your medical file. People who do not want this information provided to their insurance company may opt for private pay.
